About the Speaker:

Prof. Shengwei Wang obtained his PhD from University of Liege in 1993 and jointed the Hong Kong Polytechnic University at the same year. He is the Chair Professor of Building Services Engineering in the Department of Building Services Engineering and the director of Research Laboratory of Building Energy and Automation in the university. He is extensively involved in the research and application of building energy management, fault diagnosis and optimal control, and intelligent building and building automation technology. He obtained over twenty-five research funds from the Research Grants Council (RGC) of Hong Kong, National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and other resources over the last ten years. He published two books, coauthored four books, and published over 260 papers in refereed journals and conferences (including about 120 papers in journals cited by SCI). He is an associate editor of ‘HVAC&R Research’ and editorial panel member of a few other journals, and a member of the Engineering Panel of RGC. He also holds eight guest/adjunct professorships of Mainland and US universities.

Abstract:

Central air-conditioning systems in large buildings usually consume more than 50% of the overall building energy consumption, of which a significant proportion might be wasted. The energy waste during the operation stage mainly results from the various problems left behind at different stages of the building life-cycle. In order to effectively reduce building energy consumption, building life-cycle diagnosis, commissioning and optimization are necessary. A comprehensive approach and technologies are proposed and developed, which aim at ensuring that central air-conditioning systems meet the design intent and approach best performance through the implementation of building life cycle diagnosis/commissioning as well as optimization of air-condition systems and their control. In parallel, the speaker will also present how to integrate academic research with practical application and how to enhance the training PhD students in the process.
