The system's ability to adapt to the temperature conditions in the building's interior, with respect to the external climatic conditions. In that case it is characterised as a flexible one.

The system's ability to adapt to varying thermal demands in the various areas of the building (apartments, offices etc.). In this case it is characterised as an autonomous system.

The vast majority of contemporary buildings feature flexible, autonomous heating systems.
