The luminous distribution of the luminaires has a strong impact on the modelling ability of the light and the contrasts in the scene. The more direct the lighting, the higher the contrasts. Light striking an object under an angle will emphasise its form and texture more than diffuse light.

Diffusely and directly lit wall
Artificial light usually has a higher directionality than daylight. Indirect luminaires (uplighters) create a more diffuse lighting than direct luminaires (downlighters) since their light light is reflected off the ceiling resulting in softer shadows.
