Abstract
Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) has increasingly become an important issue in highly urbanized knowledge-based economies where substantial economic activities occur in air-conditioned buildings.
  • How does IAQ affect performance?
  • What do these studies suggest as plausible underlying mechanisms?
  • What can be done to effectively mitigate these adverse effects?
This talk presents an overview of these findings, particularly those conducted at the National University of Singapore, and their implications, and discusses technological developments that may be effective as solutions. In particular, two innovative technologies are described: personalized ventilation (at the individual level) and the single coil twin fan air-conditioning system (at the macro level).
Dr. Tham is Head at the Department of Building and Deputy Director, Centre for Total Building Performance, National University of Singapore (NUS). He is an Academy Fellow of the International Academy for Indoor Air Sciences (IAIAS), and currently President of the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate (ISIAQ). He directs the research program in Indoor Environment and Health at NUS, and has published more than 150 articles in this field. He has held Visiting Professorships at universities in China and Hong Kong, and is currently a Visiting Professor at the Czech Technical University.
